6 Tips For Getting The New Year Started Right (And Sticking With It)

Rynnie Cotter

It’s the beginning of the new year, which means many people are making New Year’s resolutions. A new year provides the perfect opportunity to assess the areas in your life you’d like to change or improve. What better time to reset and refocus? This often involves setting goals and making progress throughout the year. But how do you get the year started the right way? Here are some tips to get 2023 started the right way and stick to it.

Conduct A Self-Review

Beginning with a self-review is crucial to consider how the past year was for you. Although 2021 was full of unexpected moments, evaluate yourself regarding what you accomplished. Primarily, focus on the goals you set at the beginning of the year. Ask yourself: What went well in 2022? What needs improvements as the new year begins? What new skills or relationships did you acquire and make a priority in 2022?

A self-review provides a better understanding of your highs and lows of the past year. In addition, it helps you set a precedent for the coming year, mainly when crafting your goals.

Finish Tasks

We’re beginning the new year, but are you overwhelmed with a long list of errands from last year? Completing different tasks on your list enables you to start the year with a clean slate and a freshly crafted to-do list. Thus, if you have anything you haven’t finished on your list, it is time to cross it off. This makes you feel ready to start the new year in high spirits and avoid piling up your list with last year’s errands. If there’s something on your “to-do” list that’s been there for a while, ask yourself if it’s really a priority and something that must be done. If not, take it off your list and move on to new goals.

Set Up New Goals

If you’re yet to set your goals, now is the time to write down your first goal of the year. For your plans to work, ensure they’re SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Timely). We also recommend writing your goals so you can come back and reflect on your progress. This enables you to focus and avoid working to achieve very general goals.

Know What You Really Want

If you have a dream you intend to bring into reality, focus on it to define your lifestyle and get a general idea about achieving it. For example, you may dream about losing weight and gaining muscle. Ask yourself why you haven’t yet reached it, or why you aren’t doing it right now. Determine obstacles preventing you from achieving what you want, and how you can avert or rearrange your priorities to get what you really want.

Be at The Top of The List

Based on what you really want in the new year, put yourself at the top of the list. Begin by taking care of yourself and strive to achieve your goals to become a better person, whether friend, spouse, child, or parent. It is an effective way to stand out in the new year before focusing on others or your business.

Remember to Have Fun

While you focus on your new resolutions, create time to enjoy yourself. It should never be a dull year concentrating on achieving your goals. Instead, have room to engage in things you enjoy, challenging yourself with new and innovative things. You can also take a break from your routine and do something outside of the box.
