A 17th century poet once said that “no man is an island.” This is just another way of saying that people depend upon each other for countless things and that group accountability is powerful. This also applies to learning how to become healthier and more fit. If you think you and you alone must have all the strength, knowledge, and willpower to tackle changing your lifestyle, don’t be so hard on yourself!
By joining a group of other like-minded individuals, you’ll discover great tips and tricks to help you succeed. And who knows? You might enjoy the group accountability so much that you become an integral part of not just your own success, but part of the success of other group members as well!
Why Is Group Accountability so Powerful?
Knowledge
One of the first things you’ll notice in a group of health-minded individuals is the ready-made knowledge base. It becomes so much easier and faster to fully get on board a program when you have the collective knowledge of others right at yours fingertips. As you make progress on their journey and confront new challenges, it is helpful to have a continual and reliable source of support.
Inspiration
At the beginning of your fitness journey, it can be daunting to think of all the work still ahead. There is something so inspiring when you read about the success of other group members who were faced with even bigger challenges, yet pulled off an amazing success story. That thought of “if they can do it, then I can do it too” holds tremendous power. In fact, this often becomes the launching pad for many other success stories.
Encouragement
Some people want to make real improvements in their health, but find little or no support at home. Improving your health and fitness is challenging and becomes even more so when you’re surrounded by “negative Nancys.” These people may not understand the battles an aspiring health and fitness warrior must overcome, often on a daily basis. Fortunately, there are other people who do understand and are willing to share positive encouragement to others in the group.
Personal Accountability
Some people simply need that extra boost of personal accountability that a group often provides. It’s one thing to privately tell yourself you’re going to exercise this week. It’s an entirely different story if you publicly state to a group of friends you are indeed going to exercise!
Publicly committing yourself to a goal in front of others is often the catalyst one needs to squash that annoying little internal voice that whispers something like, “you’re so busy this week, you can exercise next week”. This is a golden opportunity to “one up” that annoying little voice. Show it that you’re going to exercise like a boss in the upcoming week. And don’t forget to tell your group friends all about it!
